i was already in bed, but i figured i needed to write something for today. inspiration being the OMD concert in Birmingham back in 1993. okay, not that i was at the concert or anything, but i was listening to "dream ticket" on the bbc and i just wanted to write about it.
OMD is one of my favorite bands. sure, they use a great deal of synth, which i not particularly keen on. however, they just have great pop songs and they are rather catchy. i mean can anyone tell me a better bitter love song than, "so in love?" granted, "yes" by butler and mcalmont is a pretty close second. both are equality great, but OMD continuously made great music from their inception in 1978 to paul leaving in the late 80's. and i have to say andy made several decent albums after that. i really enjoyed "sugar tax" and i think "liberator" was good (expecially the one sampling barry white's, "love's theme" - cathay pacific, the heart of asia) granted, i don't have all the OMD albums, but if you have their original discography, best of, etc... you'd know what i mean. every song on that album is fucking amazing. plain and simply, one of the best, "best of's" out there. but if i was forced to get an album, i would certainly get sugar tax. i believe that was the first album andy did without paul, and it's great (saved for that crappy apollo XI song - what the fuck is that?) just to let you in on a little secret, i get into these fucked up musical phases where i get so wrapped up into a certain artist or band, that i need to get my hands on everything he/she/they've done. example: i was in an OMD phase maybe a year and half ago, right after i came back from a horrendous trip to hong kong (painful memories of an ex-girlfriend), and i purchased the b-sides album. it wasn't particularly impressive (though i should give it another listen), but it was a signed copy by andy. so that was pretty cool. so for today (thursday), i was kinda on an OMD binge. and i figure i'll be tomorrow as well. who knows? album/song of the day: sugar tax by OMD length of time stuck in traffic: approx. 2.5 hours
